Who they are

Cully Barnaby marries Simon Dixon in Blood Wedding. Their wedding is the central family milestone in that episode, alongside Tom’s investigation.

Cully Barnaby is Tom and Joyce’s daughter, played by Laura Howard in recurring appearances across Series 1–13. She is present from the opening period of the series and remains part of the family story through Tom’s final series, with Blood Wedding a major adult milestone. Cully works as an actor, which gives her reasons to take temporary jobs and move through different communities. That profession is central to her own identity on screen; it is not simply a device for giving Tom access to a case. She has a life and ambitions beyond the Causton household, even when an episode brings those worlds into close contact.

Cully’s place in the programme differs from Joyce’s. Joyce is an established adult partner to the lead detective, while Cully’s recurring appearances let the audience watch a daughter grow up and form a separate future.
