A glassmaking dynasty begins to resemble Hamlet after its chairman dies abroad and the family company faces closure.
After Alan King dies during a business trip to China, King's Crystal returns to Midsomer under severe financial pressure. His widow Hilary marries Alan's brother Charles, while sons Ian and David respond very differently to the new order and to the proposed loss of the family works.
Company accountant Peter Baxter is killed with a Masonic poniard and Ian is later poisoned. Barnaby follows the money through the factory, but Cully's production of Hamlet helps him recognise how insistently members of the King family are being pushed into familiar theatrical roles.
