Research trail

What the records mean.

For the first 95 cases, we use the published episode-by-episode body counts. Later cases are checked against episode descriptions and selected synopses. We group methods into broad categories and describe them in our own words.

“Historical” means that the death occurred before the main investigation or is revealed through backstory. “Other” combines accidental, natural and unresolved deaths because the broad Times total reports accidental and natural deaths together.
