Why it matters

The first series closes by putting its most traditional detective inside its least traditional household.

Bill Carter, one of the founders of the Lodge of the Golden Windhorse, dies after falling down the stairs at the commune's country house. The residents describe it as an accident, but Barnaby and Troy find competing loyalties beneath the Lodge's language of harmony and rebirth.

The death of spiritual leader Ian Craigie during a ritual makes the inquiry unmistakably criminal. A wealthy parent who wants the land, a resident living under another identity and a silent boy who may have seen too much pull the detectives towards the Lodge's financial and family history.

Break the seal: reveal the finding

The deaths protect a concealed identity and the future of the estate; the child's silence, rather than the Lodge's rituals, is the route to what happened.

The Golden Windhorse is a real medieval house

Nether Winchendon House supplies the Lodge and its grounds, giving the commune a suitably secluded screen identity.

Causton and the village

Old Amersham provides a Causton establishing view, while Cuddington's pub appears as the Lodge's local village pub.

Verified decisive clue

Archive case 5 · checked 17 September 2026Tim Reilly's recognition of Craigie's final gesture

Tim's repeated pointing is first mistaken for an accusation against Guy Gamelin, but reconstructing the moment shows that the dying Craigie pointed at Christopher Wainwright. Christopher's attempt to kill Tim confirms why the witness was dangerous and identifies Andrew Carter behind the assumed name.

Verified red herring

Archive case 5 · checked 17 September 2026Guy Gamelin's inheritance dispute and Ian's dying gesture

Guy confronts Ian over Suhami's planned three-million-pound gift, and witnesses initially read Ian's final gesture as pointing towards him. Tim later establishes that Ian was indicating Andrew Carter instead, so Guy's genuine dispute does not make him the killer.
