Wealthy landowner Gregory Lancaster dies at home, but his body vanishes before the expected formalities can begin. The disappearance turns an already tense inheritance into a body-snatching inquiry in which relatives, staff and local professionals all have reasons to control what happens next.
Barnaby and Nelson work with newly arrived pathologist Kam Karimore as further macabre events unsettle Little Malton. The investigation must establish whether Gregory's missing remains are evidence, leverage or merely the first move in a much older family dispute.

Sonny DesaiSonny gave the paralysed Richard Melrose a lethal morphine injection at Richard's request after his Antarctic fall, a mercy killing disclosed only at the resolution. Gregory Lancaster later died from pneumonia; Craig Coffley stole the Lancaster bodies, faked his own death and tried to kill Felix, but completed no murder in the present-day case.

Sonny acted as a mercy killer after Richard's fall left him paralysed, a storm was approaching and the expedition could not rescue him without endangering the rest of the team. Richard asked for the lethal morphine injection, which Sonny describes as the hardest decision of his life rather than an attempt to protect the mineral discovery.
