Harriet Farmer wakes after nearly a year in a coma. She had been found gravely injured after leaving to elope with boyfriend Finn Robson, who remains missing, and fragments of her memory threaten whoever attacked them.
Barnaby and Jones investigate a competitive chess circle at the King's Gambit Hotel, where family rivalries and tournament ambitions overlap with the young couple's disappearance. Decoding recorded chess moves becomes essential to reconstructing the night Harriet was attacked.
