The Midsomer Mummers are preparing a charity performance of The Pirates of Penzance when an unidentified man is found dead inside their theatre. Once he is named as Vince Summersby, the detectives begin reconstructing his connection to the company and to people who would rather keep the past off the programme.
A second death on the stairs and another body on the stage make the production itself central to the inquiry. Barnaby and Winter examine wills, professional rivalries and a near-fatal attack as opening night approaches.
