The Midsomer Mummers are preparing a charity performance of The Pirates of Penzance when an unidentified man is found dead inside their theatre. Once he is named as Vince Summersby, the detectives begin reconstructing his connection to the company and to people who would rather keep the past off the programme.
A second death on the stairs and another body on the stage make the production itself central to the inquiry. Barnaby and Winter examine wills, professional rivalries and a near-fatal attack as opening night approaches.

Verified killer
Derek SharrowDerek killed Vince Summersby after learning that the former employer had ignored the asbestos report that explained his terminal lung disease, killed Graham Handsworth in revenge for years of school bullying and killed Katisha Empson because he blamed her treatment of his mother for her decline and death. Police reached former teacher Jeremy Whittingdale before Derek's planned final reckoning could become another killing.
Verified motive
Terminally ill Derek used the production to stage a final reckoning with people he believed had destroyed his life and family. Vince had ignored the asbestos report that caused Derek's fatal disease; Graham had subjected him to daily school bullying; Katisha had exploited and publicly shamed his mother; and former teacher Jeremy was the planned final target for failing to protect him.
