Burwood Mantle hosts an international cycling event in which the leading rider defies instructions and beats his own teammate to the finish. His subsequent murder puts the team's hierarchy, commercial sponsors and personal relationships under immediate scrutiny.
Barnaby and Nelson find bribery, blackmail and concealed deals moving through the race organisation. Further violence shows that the result is part of a wider conflict about who controls a rider's career and who profits when loyalty breaks down.

Kim FosseKim killed Greg Eddon when his blackmail threatened to expose her past and killed Aiden McCordell because he knew Mitch was doping and had left the team. She later attacked Des when he tried to withdraw Mitch from the race; Judith Oliver's earlier fatal traffic accident resulted from Mary Appleton's altered route plan, while Jez Oliver's intimidation of Mary remains separate.

Kim's fear of abandonment became a possessive fixation on Mitch. She killed Greg when his blackmail threatened to reveal her marriage and cost her Mitch, killed Aiden because his knowledge of the doping and departure threatened Mitch's career, and attacked Des when he tried to withdraw Mitch from the race; she cast each act as protecting the relationship she could not bear to lose.
