An international cycle race turns fatal after its leader ignores team orders and takes the victory for himself.
Burwood Mantle hosts an international cycling event in which the leading rider defies instructions and beats his own teammate to the finish. His subsequent murder puts the team's hierarchy, commercial sponsors and personal relationships under immediate scrutiny.
Barnaby and Nelson find bribery, blackmail and concealed deals moving through the race organisation. Further violence shows that the result is part of a wider conflict about who controls a rider's career and who profits when loyalty breaks down.
