Little Crosby's folk festival is thrown into crisis when organiser Toby Winning is found drowned in a bowl containing eggs and live eels. The method appears to quote a lyric from a notorious ballad associated with the late musician Johnny Carver, whose disputed legacy still supports local careers and businesses.
When further deaths echo the same song, Barnaby and Nelson investigate performers, organisers and members of the Carver family. The case asks who benefits from keeping one version of the ballad's creation—and of Johnny's death—in circulation.

Tom AsherTom shot Johnny Carver twenty years earlier and staged the death as suicide, then killed Toby Winning and Brian Grey after they discovered the surviving recording. He killed Frank Wainwright after misreading the hotel sale as a threat to his marriage and was stopped while preparing to shoot Claire.

Tom's possessive identity rested on being Claire's husband and self-appointed protector. He shot Johnny after confronting him over Claire, killed Toby and Brian to conceal the recording of that crime, and killed Frank because he misread the hotel purchase as an attempt to destroy his marriage; Claire's decision to leave finally made her a target too.
