A folk festival revives an infamous local song—and the disputed death that inspired its most memorable verse.
Little Crosby's folk festival is thrown into crisis when organiser Toby Winning is found drowned in a bowl containing eggs and live eels. The method appears to quote a lyric from a notorious ballad associated with the late musician Johnny Carver, whose disputed legacy still supports local careers and businesses.
When further deaths echo the same song, Barnaby and Nelson investigate performers, organisers and members of the Carver family. The case asks who benefits from keeping one version of the ballad's creation—and of Johnny's death—in circulation.
