The George Hotel

The George Hotel stands on the High Street in Dorchester-on-Thames, a small Oxfordshire town whose abbey and old streets make a rewarding stop for visitors. The hotel occupies a fifteenth-century coaching inn whose gabled timber façade and galleried courtyard still greet visitors. Its oak beams and fires preserve the old inn atmosphere, while modern rooms and dining keep it in use today. On screen, the courtyard and broad frontage readily read as a village gathering place or a country hotel. The best-known Midsomer role is the Maid in Splendour pub in The Maid in Splendour; later it appears as The Feathers Hotel and a hotel in Lower Crosby.

Dorchester’s historic streets are compact enough to explore on foot, and the George makes an easy visual landmark along the town’s main street. Its changing screen identities all draw on the recognisable welcome of an old inn: somewhere guests might arrive, meet or stay.
