Beyond the camera
About the real place
Wallingford is a compact Thames-side market town with a history far older than its television alter ego. It was an important fortified Saxon settlement and later the site of one of medieval England's most powerful castles. The surviving castle earthworks, market square and riverside give the centre an unusually rich mix of civic and rural scenery.
Visitors can combine the familiar streets around the Market Place and Corn Exchange with Wallingford Museum, the castle gardens and a walk beside the Thames. The town is substantial enough for cafés and shops but small enough to explore on foot, which makes it one of the most practical bases for a filming-location day.
