A murdered music teacher and a missing manuscript reopen the authorship and family history of a late composer.
Retired teacher Arthur Leggott is killed after interrupting an intruder, and a manuscript by late composer Joan Alder disappears before auction. Questions about the handwriting and a newly surfaced letter suggest that the supposedly valuable work may be a forgery.
As the manuscript passes among relatives, collectors and dealers, more people die. Barnaby and Scott reconstruct Joan's relationships and the work's provenance, treating authorship as both an artistic question and a route to money.
