The men and women of Broughton have maintained a feud since the First World War, commemorated through a Skimmington Ride. When 90-year-old Mildred Danvers is poisoned before the event, Barnaby and Jones investigate campaigners for both sides.
Reverend Anthony Gant is shot during the ride and another death follows. Pankhurst Hall, Marwood Manor and the village's competing versions of its own history lead the detectives towards older family arrangements rather than a simple ideological attack.
