The murder of a disgraced former policeman reopens an ugly chapter in Causton's force and a rehabilitation scheme for offenders.
Ronnie Tyler leaves the Safe Haven rehabilitation community intending to rebuild his life, while former police officer Jack Colby is killed. Their connection leads Barnaby back to a period of misconduct within Causton police and to people who have constructed new lives on an unstable version of the past.
A further death after blackmail deepens the inquiry. Barnaby and Jones must separate the crimes committed by residents from the harms inflicted by those once trusted to police them, with old records proving as consequential as anything found at the new scenes.
