An undertaker is killed in his chapel of rest while a spiritualist church offers the bereaved rather more information than chance should allow.
Undertaker Patrick Pennyman is found dead in his own chapel of rest. Joyce's friend Elizabeth Key suspects that Pennyman stole from the deceased and that the Spirit of Friendship church obtains its intimate messages through distinctly earthly surveillance.
After Elizabeth and a local labourer are also killed, Barnaby and Scott test apparent spirit communication against missing jewellery, funeral records and the village's abandoned railway. The supernatural performance matters because it gives ordinary greed an unusually persuasive disguise.
