Dr Alan Delaney borrows James Kirkwood's car and is killed by a vehicle that leaves the road deliberately. Barnaby suspects that Kirkwood was the intended victim, especially once his engagement to Delyth Mostyn reveals the hostility of her family and the complications surrounding an earlier death.
The trail carries Barnaby and Jones from village consulting rooms to Snowdonia. The detectives must distinguish disapproval of the marriage from a willingness to kill, while dust and vehicle evidence provide a more dependable account than the suspects' family loyalties.
