A road protest and the deaths of an isolated couple lead Jones back to a schoolfriend lost in a childhood hit-and-run.
Reclusive Ron and Libby Wilson are found dead as Dunstan divides over plans for a new bypass. Their story intersects with Michael, a boy Jones knew at primary school who was left disabled after a hit-and-run and then disappeared from the lives of his classmates.
The deaths of members of the Purdy family force Jones to confront a childhood agreement and the adults who allowed it to harden into silence. Barnaby must keep his sergeant inside the investigation while recognising that Jones is also one of its witnesses.
