Toby Wagner returns to life in Tamworth Springs after being acquitted of killing Viola Deepdale. Reuben Tooms argues for his innocence and wants Toby admitted to the Stitcher Society, a group for people recovering from heart surgery, but other members are far less willing to forgive or forget.
Reuben's murder is followed by another death at the society's premises and a shooting presented as an accident. Barnaby and Winter must separate evidence about Viola's old case from fresh blackmail, private loyalties and the grudges circulating inside the club.

Mimi DagmarMimi killed her business partner Viola Deepdale years earlier and framed Toby Wagner, then killed Rueben Tooms and Georgie Tremayne when Rueben's supposed new evidence began clearing Toby. She killed investigator Mack McInally after recognising that he had joined the society under false pretences, although Mack had actually found no new witness; Harry Marx's later attack on Toby was interrupted.
Verified motive
Mimi killed Viola during a dispute over Mimi's flirting with male clients and the resulting lost sales, then framed Toby. Years later she killed Rueben and Georgie to suppress supposed evidence that would clear Toby, and Mack after his lack of a surgery scar exposed his false identity; Mack had found nothing, so the three later killings were committed to conceal evidence that did not exist.
