A tax inspector is found in a cider vat as two neighbouring villages prepare to revive an alarming fertility custom.
Barnaby and Jones attend the spring fair celebrating the bond between Midsomer Abbas and Midsomer Herne. After Barnaby samples the local cider and becomes ill, tax inspector Peter Slim is discovered dead inside a cider vat; he had been investigating illegal alcohol production.
The inquiry crosses two insular communities while plans proceed to revive The Stag, a fertility rite opposed by the local vicar. Fingerprints and a bloodied staff seem to settle the case, but Barnaby doubts the tidy answer and follows Peter's earlier marriage into a history the villages have protected.

The cider trade is not the deepest motive. Peter Slim's former marriage connects the victims to abuse hidden behind village tradition, and Barnaby rejects the planted evidence to expose it.
