Jo Starling returns to her Great Worthy cottage and finds housemate Dianne Price dead in the bath beneath a message written in red lipstick. More carefully staged deaths follow, each decorated with wedding language and references that seem to echo notorious crimes.
Barnaby and Jones question an intrusive landlord, a retired policeman, former sex worker Liz Tomlin and the operators of a donkey sanctuary. The pattern is elaborate, but the emotional trigger lies closer to an impending wedding than to any desire to recreate crime history for its own sake.
