After social-services investigator Gerry Dawkins is found dead in the river, Barnaby rejects the convenient explanation of a canoeing accident. His work had brought him into contact with elderly siblings William and Mary Bingham, whose isolated estate and unresolved family losses attract official concern.
Barnaby and Jones explore a nearby artistic circle, the deaths of the Binghams' children and relationships that have been hidden for decades. A second death beneath a collapsing tower of newspapers turns the family's extraordinary home into part of the evidence.
