DCI John Barnaby arrives in Causton as Darnley Park School prepares to host a vintage-car rally. Years earlier a celebrated racing driver was found dead at the school in what appeared to be suicide; when a radio personality judging the rally dies in similar circumstances, Barnaby questions both verdicts.
Working with Ben Jones, who is still adjusting to a different Barnaby, he examines the school's governors, former pupils and the owners of a prized car. The inquiry tests whether institutional reputation has kept an old crime polished and out of sight.

The rally death deliberately echoes the older supposed suicide. Barnaby uses the car, the school's history and the victims' shared loyalties to uncover the concealed link between them.
