Furniture maker Conor Bridgeman is killed during a ghost-hunting party at Morton Shallows Manor, where a local legend about a blacksmith's daughter has already made every unexplained sound suspicious. An antique sword, a strange recording and sharply different versions of the haunting give Barnaby and his new sergeant several stories to test.
The inquiry moves between the manor, the village pub and families whose histories do not fit their public identities. As another death borrows imagery from the same legend, Nelson has to learn quickly that folklore in Midsomer is usually less supernatural—and more useful to a killer—than it first appears.
