Elverton-cum-Latterly is preparing a charity drag extravaganza when parish chair Lois Springfield is found dead in the local theatre. Because she opposed the event, hostility towards the performers looks like the obvious context for the crime, particularly after Malik Payne receives a warning and narrowly escapes a car.
A second death after the show and the collapse of terminally ill Rocco Templeton complicate that theory. Barnaby and Winter discover that somebody is trying to begin a new life while preventing a concealed part of the village's past from becoming public.
