Farmer Martin Strickland is found in woodland after being coated in truffle oil and mauled by a wild boar. His property includes Wyvern House, an acclaimed country-house restaurant run by celebrity chef Ruth Cameron, where polished service conceals disputes over land, family and the future of the business.
When Strickland's daughter is also killed and other people connected with the restaurant are threatened, Barnaby and Nelson examine staff loyalties, old relationships and the commercial value of the estate. The kitchen's enthusiasm for wild ingredients becomes evidence as well as atmosphere.
