The DeQuetteville family legend warns that anyone who sees the headless Sir Geoffrey riding a grey horse will soon die. As the family stages a Civil War pageant and renews its ancient feud with the neighbouring Fleetwoods, the apparition returns and the prediction appears to work.
Barnaby and Jones test the pageant's props, divided inheritances and the movements of a very real horse. The timing suggests that more than one person must be involved, but the family's performances make cooperation and deception difficult to separate.
