Retired financier Patrick Morgan is bludgeoned in woodland after a bitter dispute within the Midsomer-in-the-Marsh Ornithological Society. Members have challenged an alleged sighting of a rare African bird, while farmer George Napier opposes plans affecting his adjoining land.
The case becomes more personal when questions arise over the pregnancy of Patrick's wife Nina, a former ballet dancer. Barnaby and Jones use photographs and recorded calls to determine which sightings are genuine and which were arranged by someone whose collecting instinct has become dangerous.
