Finchmere Airfield owner Bernard King is killed in spectacular fashion when he is dropped from an aircraft. The flying club is already divided by proposed restructuring, threatened jobs and local opposition, leaving Barnaby and Nelson with suspects on both sides of the perimeter fence.
The detectives enter a close community of pilots, mechanics and families who have inherited different accounts of a Second World War mission. As the present-day business fight intensifies, the older story becomes less like proud club history and more like evidence.
