John and Sarah attend the retirement celebration of DCS Elaine Bennet, who is moving to Challis Court, a secure estate established for former police officers. The cordial speeches conceal old resentments, and Elaine is found dead in the family car the following morning.
The inquiry returns to the Goldman–Forbes job and money that vanished years earlier. When Elaine's husband is also killed, Barnaby and Winter must investigate people trained to understand police procedure—and a community whose trust depends on keeping one shared secret.
