John and Sarah attend the retirement celebration of DCS Elaine Bennet, who is moving to Challis Court, a secure estate established for former police officers. The cordial speeches conceal old resentments, and Elaine is found dead in the family car the following morning.
The inquiry returns to the Goldman–Forbes job and money that vanished years earlier. When Elaine's husband is also killed, Barnaby and Winter must investigate people trained to understand police procedure—and a community whose trust depends on keeping one shared secret.

Verified killer
Lionel BennetLionel pushed his mother Elaine during their argument after learning that she had concealed a hereditary fatal illness from him; her fatal head injury was unintended, but he staged a car crash and cut the brake cable to redirect the inquiry. He later killed his stepfather Damian to sustain the false wrong-target theory and prevent Damian's investigation from exposing him. Sebastian Cabot had stolen the Goldman Forbes money, but was not their killer.
Verified motive
Lionel confronted Elaine after learning she had concealed a potentially fatal hereditary condition, leaving him unknowingly at risk of passing it to his daughter. He pushed her during the argument without intending the fatal injury, then staged the crash and killed Damian to preserve a wrong-target theory and keep that concealment from being exposed.
