The annual Oak Apple festivities are under way when a woman is found dead in a stream. The festival queen competition has returned after an eight-year absence, and the victim's place in local relationships points Barnaby and Jones back to the events of Death's Shadow.
Poisoned correspondence, family strain and the pressure placed on the young contestants make the revived tradition increasingly dangerous. Familiar residents offer continuity, but the detectives must decide which old story the new killer is trying to repeat.
