In Midsomer Murders

Iris Rainbird is one of Badger's Drift's most watchful residents. Her sharp interest in other people's affairs helps establish the pilot episode's mixture of village comedy, discomfort and concealed leverage.

Performer biography

A distinguished Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre performer, Elizabeth Spriggs moved easily between classical stage work and screen character roles. Her film credits included Sense and Sensibility, for which she received a BAFTA nomination, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Her screen work stretched from literary adaptations and television drama to films for family audiences. She played Mrs Jennings in Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility and the Fat Lady in the first Harry Potter film. In The Killings at Badger's Drift, her Iris Rainbird helped establish the programme's taste for strong, sharply observed character performances.
