A brewery has opened among the ruins of supposedly cursed Causton Abbey, turning local folklore into part of its brand. The venture's launch is shattered when Adam Asoba is killed in a brewing vat and Fleur Perkins discovers that the victim had officially died three years earlier under another name.
Adam's staged death and the insurance claim explain why he was living under an assumed identity, but a second murder shows that the brewery has another secret to protect. Barnaby and Winter move between the business partners, the abbey's history and residents who are happy to let a ghost take the blame.

Jenny MossJenny went to the brewery intending to kill Emani Taylor because she believed Emani endangered her children. Adam Osoba arrived instead and fell into the vat during their struggle; Jenny closed the lid, then later strangled Emani and used the Brother Jozef story to connect the deaths. Faiza Jindal helped fabricate Jenny's alibi but is not labelled as a co-killer.
Verified motive
Terminally ill Jenny was terrified that Emani's alcohol-fuelled violence would leave her children frightened and unsafe after Jenny died. She went to the brewery intending to remove Emani, but Adam arrived instead and fell during their struggle; Jenny deliberately closed the vat and later killed Emani, staging both deaths around the abbey legend. Faiza's false alibi supported Jenny but did not make her a co-killer.
