A radical new cricket tournament is followed by the death of its star player—and the return of a familiar former detective.
Lower Pampling stages a new-format cricket tournament that alarms traditionalists and attracts commercial interest. Star player Leo Henderson is murdered in the training shed, drawing Barnaby and Winter into allegations involving gambling, bribery and team politics.
A man calling himself Jack Morris repeatedly appears ahead of the investigation. Barnaby recognises his former sergeant Ben Jones, now a detective inspector working undercover, whose separate inquiry connects the tournament to burglary and a missing local woman.
