Lower Pampling stages a new-format cricket tournament that alarms traditionalists and attracts commercial interest. Star player Leo Henderson is murdered in the training shed, drawing Barnaby and Winter into allegations involving gambling, bribery and team politics.
A man calling himself Jack Morris repeatedly appears ahead of the investigation. Barnaby recognises his former sergeant Ben Jones, now a detective inspector working undercover, whose separate inquiry connects the tournament to burglary and a missing local woman.

Germaine TroughtonGermaine killed Leo Henderson with the bowling machine after confronting him over his treatment of Cilla and their son, then killed witness Fitz Theara with her test-match trophy when his blackmail continued. Wade McMaster and Butler Styles's match-fixing scheme and Wade's abduction and attack on Jones remain separate offences.
Verified motive
Germaine acted in sudden rage after learning that Leo had always known about his son with Cilla yet cared only about keeping the truth from his wife; she fixated on the life Cilla and Germaine herself might otherwise have had. Fitz witnessed the killing and demanded money, so Germaine killed him to end the blackmail rather than as part of the separate match-fixing scheme.
