Two Barnabys. One extremely unsafe county.
Tom and John are cousins as well as successive Causton detectives. The change preserves the programme's central format while giving the second era a different home life, temperament and set of partnerships.
Tom Barnaby
Patient, dry and deeply familiar with Midsomer's social codes. Tom often solves the case by noticing which old story the village has agreed not to question.

Foundation
Pilot—Series 7. Close early Graham adaptations, Tom's family counterweight and Troy's impulsiveness establish a darker, earthier village mystery.
Consolidation
Series 8—13. Scott and Jones reshape the partnership as the programme grows more confident in its bizarre village worlds and prepares Tom's graceful retirement.
Reinvention
Series 14 onward. John and Sarah create a warmer household while changing sergeants, pathologists and contemporary subcultures refresh the format.
