Residents of two Monks Barton cottages disappear near woods said to be haunted, and the abandoned homes contain enough blood to suggest violence without immediately revealing its shape. A body in a shallow grave gives Barnaby and Jones a concrete crime amid stories of monks, spirits and voices from the dead.
The detectives follow property, relationships and an earlier offence through the village while local fascination with the paranormal distorts witness accounts. The episode distinguishes the origin of the legend from the modern scheme that borrows its atmosphere.
