How to watch Midsomer Murders in order.
The simple answer is: begin with the 1997 pilot, then follow Series 1 to 25. The complications come from catalogues that number the pilot separately and from later series released on different dates in different countries.

Step 1
Start with the pilot
The Killings at Badger’s Drift was first shown in 1997. Some catalogues separate it from Series 1; this Casebook places it at the beginning of the complete run.
Step 2
Continue through Series 1–13
These are the Tom Barnaby years. Watch the numbered series in order; Christmas-length scheduling gaps do not change the story sequence.
Step 3
Follow the handover
The Sword of Guillaume introduces John Barnaby, Fit for Murder closes Tom’s regular run, and Death in the Slow Lane begins John’s era.
Step 4
Continue with Series 14–25
These are the released John Barnaby series. Series 26 is commissioned but remains outside the released viewing order until episodes are transmitted.
